THE MISS Grimethorpe and Brierley competition certainly gave judges paws-for-thought.
The first contestant, whose credentials include vying for world peace and testing dog biscuits, was Lizzie the King Charles spaniel.
Nominated by owner Beryl Sargesson she trotted down the aisle at St Paul’s Church, Brierley with as much aplomb as if she had been on a catwalk runway.
She was joined by an 11 year-old school girl, a pupil from Brierley C of E School and Eve, a senior citizen who has only just moved to Grimethorpe.
The unenviable job of judging the lovely ladies was given to Father Anthony Pritchard, from Gawber Church.
He said: “When I got ordained I never thought I would be judging a Miss Grimethorpe and Brierley contest, talk about the job of Solomon.”
He picked worthy winner, 11 year-old Amelia Hopkins of Saville Walk, Brierley. She attends Hemsworth Arts College and is a karate brown belt and would like to be a teacher or a vet.
Her new role includes presenting prizes at functions related to St Luke’s and St Paul’s.
Father Peter Needham said: “It was the first and hopefully it won’t be the last. From little acorns grow mighty oaks. I think the dog was an after thought but added to the general fun of the evening and stops it getting too serious.”
