PEOPLE living around Barnsley town centre are being asked what they would like done with the area's green spaces.

Places such as Swannee pond, Hoyle Mill, Measbrough Dike and the so-called hen pen at the junction of Doncaster Road and Junction Road are to be spruced with money given to the council for such purposes.

John Openshaw, the town centre community engagement officer, said a consultation day will be held on November 4 at Sheffield Road Baptist church hall from 9.30-1.30pm where people can voice their opinions.

"I have a list of around 20 places which people have identified as possible sites for improvements but we don't want to do anything without seeing what people want first.

"We have specific pots of money for specific areas, such as £7,500 for Swannee pond which we're considering using to put in fishing platforms."

Other areas to be considered are green spaces at the junction of Dobie Street and Cope Street; the Warren Quarry Lane junction with Cope Street; Sugden's recreation ground; Elm Row; Measbrough Dike from Doncaster Road to Sheffield Road Worsbrough Common recreation ground and Cranbrook Street.
