Barnsley FC are hoping to organise a home friendly against a well-known foreign side, with Romanian club Steau Bucharest or Club Brugges from Belgium the likely opponents.
Both clubs are amongst the best-known sides in their country and regularly compete in the Europa League and Champions League.
"It is not a done deal and we will have to consider the costs but it is something we would like to do," said manager David Flitcroft.
The Reds almost played Dutch giants Feyenoord in 2011 but the match was cancelled by police due to the visiting fans' record of hooliganism.
Barnsley currently have friendlies arranged at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on July 20 and at Rotherham United's New York Stadium on July 27. Tickets for the game against the Millers are £15 for adults.
Meanwhile, the first team are unlikely to play any pre-season matches against non-league clubs. Barnsley visited Stocksbridge Park Steels and Alfreton Town last year but those sort of games are not thought by the coaching staff to be beneficial to player fitness.
Flitcroft said: "Non-league pitches are not great, which is understandable, but it means there is a risk of injury to our players. The non-league players might also want to prove a point and go in too hard and injure one of my players."
Paul Heckingbottom's under 21s squad will play several away friendlies against non-league opposition and first team players could feature in those games if they struggling with fitness.
The under 21s will take on the first teams of Harrogate Town on Saturday, July 13, Gainsborough Trinity on Thursday, July 18, Eastwood Town on Tuesday July 23, Frickley Athletic on Saturday, July 27 and Halifax Town on Tuesday, July 30. They will then make two trips to the north east to face Middlesbrough under 21s on August 6 and Sunderland under 21s on August 13.
The under 18s will host Scunthorpe United on Wednesday July 17 and Burnley on Wednesday July 31 before welcoming a touring side from the USA on August 5 then visiting Sunderland five days later. The league schedule for the under 18s and under 21s has not yet been released. All friendly dates are subject to change.
