Jacob Mellis scored two fine goals as Barnsley completed their friendly schedule with their only pre-season win as they beat local rivals Rotherham United 3-2 at the New York Stadium on Saturday.
The Reds were poor in the first half and didn't create any chances but took the lead less than minute after the break when Mellis fired a superb 25-yeard free-kick into the top corner.
Mellis made it 2-0 on 55 minutes with a good finish after Chris O'Grady played him in. Chris Dagnall then showed super skill to control a David Perkins free-kick and fire in from the left side of the box.
It was 3-0 on 67 minutes but Rotherham fought back with two goals from substitute Keiran Agard.
Manager David Flitcroft said: "In the first half we got lulled into a false sense of security and we didn't play with energy or urgency or momentum. We looked lack-lustre.
"I was absolutely delighted with we way we went 3-0 up in the second half. Not just necessarily the goals ut the way we dominated Rotherham and unbalanced them. We caused them loads of problems from crosses and central attacking play.
"Then we let complacency set in and conceded twice but it was really through very bad defending. We'll work on that before the Wigan game."
Other first team players went to Frickley Athletic for an under 21s game and won 2-0 through a Jason Scotland brace.
