A Barnsley businesswoman has welcomed government proposals to allow motorists to park on double-yellow lines for 15 minutes and said it will help keep businesses trading.

Rita Britton, owner of Pollyanna on Market Hill, said allowing motorists to park on yellow lines would be 'fantastic' and would help boost high streets.

Some of the problems encountered by Rita and her staff have included the delivery of stock, collection of takeaways, and disabled people not having enough time to get in and out of cars.

"Anything that makes running a business that much easier all helps.

"That 15 minutes would allow someone to come in to collect their food or help their disabled mother out of the car without being threatened with a parking ticket and I think that's a good thing."

She said a delivery man received a parking ticket when dropping off deliveries to Pollyanna and Blah Bar.

She said although there were 4,000 parking spaces in Barnsley, none were close to Market Hill and 'a bit off leeway' was needed.

"The government need to look at things with a bit of common sense, and I'm sure it would be easier for traffic wardens."
