STRETCHED limousines will be licensed in a effort to combat fears over vehicle safety and cowboy operators.

Until now, limos have not been classed as private hire vehicles like minicabs.

But a boom in demand for them for events like birthday parties and school proms has created concern because they are currently unlicensed.

On Wednesday, Barnsley council’s licensing board agreed to regulate limos - despite many of them not meeting the authority’s standards for minicabs.

Under the plans, limos will not have to display taxi licence plates and left-hand drive cars will be allowed - without front seat passengers.

Rules on tinted windows and side-facing seats will also be relaxed for limos.
