A RECORD number of ploughmen were digging for victory in Woolley on Saturday for one of the country's biggest competitions.

More than 100 farmers took their tractors to the Barugh and District Ploughing Association's annual match, many of them travelling from all over the country.

Entrants competed for titles in semi-digger plough, mounted plough, vintage plough and reversible plough categories, with marks awarded for the neatness and straightness of the furrows.

Former British ploughing champion Geoff Fretwell, from Penistone, was given a surprise award to commemorate his 50th consecutive entry into the competition.
