A Barnsley-based carer support group - which is also on the shortlist for the Proud of Barnsley awards - has been named as one of just 40 recipients of a royal community honour.
The Duke of York's Community Initiative is presented annually to a small number of Yorkshire based organisations. They are subjected to rigorous and robust scrutiny and have to be deemed "of real value to the community, well run and an inspiration to others."
Barnsley Beacon Support Services was founded by June Marshall in May 2000 to give help, advice and support to carers and family members of drug and alcohol users. The group also raises awareness and educates the wider community on drug related issues.
The Initiative, founded by His Royal Highness The Duke of York in 1998, exists to both encourage and reward innovative and inspirational community projects in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Later this month, representatives of Barnsley Beacon Support Services will travel to Bridlington Spa's Royal Hall to attend a luncheon at which His Royal Highness will personally present recipients of the 2013 awards with their citations.
