AN APPEAL has been started to help a Thurnscoe woman with a rare disease to continue living with her parents.
Cheryl Law, 37, suffers from adult onset tay sachs disease and is one of only 17 known victims world-wide. It affects her mobility and is progressively debilitating.
Her parents, Iris and Allan, of Southfield Crescent, have launched an appeal after a Barnsley Council grant to build an extension on to their home left them several thousands pounds short.
“She was a fun loving girl and after leaving school did a secretarial course and then qualified as a hairdresser. She came back home to live and we want to build a ground floor room so that she can have her own space.”
A concert and auction at the Butchers Arms by Showaddywaddy tribute band the Rock ‘n’ Roll Rascals on Saturday night, raised £1,062.
“I’ve never done anything like this before but I’ve been amazed by everyone’s generosity and donations of raffle prizes. I can’t thank everyone enough. “Cheryl really enjoyed Saturday night, it was marvellous, but it was too much for her and she had to leave early.”
The Norfolk based band has been raising money for charity for many years. One of them is a relative of the family and brought his band to Thurnscoe to launch the appeal.
Cheryl has inherited the genetic illness from both parents and her sister is also a carrier.
“We’d never heard of it until she was diagnosed after a brain scan about eight years ago and it’s had a devastating effect on the family. We’ve found that it’s prevalent in New York Jews so we‘ve started looking into our ancestry, but it’s strange that both Allan and I are carriers as I originate from Norfolk and he’s from Yorkshire.”
