A CHURCH spire which was rebuilt brick by brick will be lit up by the Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire today.
The spire at St Thomas’s Church in Gawber had to be taken down after it was found to be unsafe while a new cross was being installed.
Work on the spire finished earlier this year and it was Christened using an ancient ceremony in which a glass of beer was poured over it.
The latest addition to the spire is a new set of exterior lamps, which will light up the building from dusk until 11.30pm each day, and Lord Lieutenant David Moody will officially turn on the illuminations this evening.
Fr Anthony Pritchett explained why the lights had been installed.
“Once we’d got the cross up, so many people noticed and said how fantastic it was. “People were ringing me and stopping me in the street to talk about it, and when we had the new lighting put in the church it just seemed to make a lot of sense that the spire should be lit up as well.”
