JIMMY Greenoff fulfilled his early promise as a schoolboy footballer when he went on to play for Leeds, Blackpool, Manchester United and England under 23s. His brother, Brian, was also a brilliant footballer and had full caps for England.

Both played for Manchester United in the 1977 Cup Final at Wembley when they beat Liverpool 2-1. Jimmy scored one of the goals.

Leslie Kaye, of Monk Bretton, played in the same team as Jimmy at Park Road Junior School in the 1950s. He has loaned to us a photograph of the team when they won the Barnsley Football Schools’ Trophy in the 1956 to 1957 season.

The photograph, taken in the school playground, shows back row, left to right: Mr Hirst (teacher), not known, not known, Brian Skelly, Geoffrey Scarf, Leslie Walton, not known, Mr Buntin. Front row: Keith (surname not known), Allen Bradbury, Jimmy Greenoff, Dennis Hutchinson, Leslie Kaye.

Allen Bradbury later played for Barnsley and Dennis Hutchinson was one of the Barnsley boys’ team which won the English Schools’ Trophy in 1961 to 1962. The team also won the Yorkshire Shield.

Leslie Kaye shone in athletics, winning the Barnsley Schools’ Sprint Championship six times. He is still involved in athletics.
