A 12 YEAR-old girl who had rare operations to amputate her knee and foot after she was born with no hip has won a top award for inspiring others.
Yasmin Senior took the Douglas Bader award at a ceremony in London on Friday. It recognises the bravery she has shown throughout her disability and for being an inspiration to others.
She was nominated by her parents Michelle and Mark of Pontefract Road, Shafton and beat off other competition including Ali, a youngster from Iraq who lost both arms and legs in a bombing incident.
Yasmin, a pupil at Willowgarth High, had an operation to remove her foot and in March, had a five hour op to take out her knee and fuse the tibia and fibia with metal plates.
Within weeks she was back at school and got her first bike.
Mum Michelle said: “I had written a story about what she had been through and we got a phone call saying would we go to the awards but her win was as much a surprise to us as it was to her.
“When they announced the award I just started sobbing my heart out. She had a great time but was just gobsmacked.
“Me and her dad are so proud and ecstatic and for me personally it was wonderful to see her get the award.”
