A NEW greyhound sanctuary in Wortley will be opened by sports minister Richard Caborn this morning — when he cut a chain of sausages.
The beef bangers were used instead of the traditional ribbon and one was given to each of the dogs at the Retired Greyhounds Rescue, at Gosling Moor Farm, Finkle Street Lane.
Owner Lynda Cattlin runs the charity which takes former racing dogs once they are about four and too old to compete.
She said: “They cannot race them any more and cannot keep them because it costs the owners money. They are marvellous dogs.”
The farm has 20 at the moment but Lynda said she has a waiting list of about 100. Contrary to popular myth the dogs need only 20 minutes' exercise twice a day.
