SCORES of pensioners have been targeted by burglars posing as water board or council officials.
Large sums have been stolen from some of the homes, police have said.
The burglars are hitting two homes a day across Barnsley and pensioners in Royston, Carlton, Wombwell, Silkstone and Goldthorpe have been victims.
Detective sergeant Paul Dickinson said: “The most common distractions have been offenders pretending to be from the water board or local council.
“There have been other similar offences where offenders have offered to carry out gardening work or other forms of property maintenance.”
Witnesses have described one offender as a white, late 30s, about 5ft 9ins, slim with short receding ginger hair. He had a scab or graze on the crown of his head. Contact: 736262.
