BARNSLEY council is to spend more than £1.3m on buying vehicles instead of hiring them.

There are 89 vehicles which are nearing the end of leases and officers say it is better to replace them than renew the agreements.

They are used by departments across the authority including Berneslai Homes and Neighbourhood Pride.

Costs of keeping the old vans and cars on the roads and the environmental benefits of using modern vehicles were said to be the reasons behind the move.
