BLOOD, births and death were all part of a gruelling stint at Barnsley hospital for three celebrities who learnt how tough it is to work in the NHS.

Comedian Sean Hughes, journalist Janet Street Porter and presenter Gail Porter spent two weeks at the hospital last summer to film So You Think You Can Nurse for Channel Five.

The three part programme begins at the end of the month and a sneak preview of the show makes interesting viewing.

Gail Porter has to comes to terms with seeing a patient die and Janet Street Porter has to cope with taking orders instead of giving them.

Meanwhile when Sean Hughes arrives on the children’s ward the nurse in charge warns him she has high expectations — and he had better meet them.

Other departments that put the stars through their paces as auxiliary nurses included A&E, orthopaedics, maternity and geriatrics.

But for Gail and Sean the NHS experience did not end when their shifts finished. They stayed in nurses' quarters, where to smoker Sean's relief he was finally allowed to have a cigarette indoors.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “Our staff are very much looking forward to watching themselves and their colleagues. We hope the programme will show the public just what a good job Barnsley hospital does.
