COUNCILLORS are worried a gypsy horse fair will be staged unannounced and on an undisclosed site in the Wombwell area before the end of March.
Members from Wombwell and Darfield do not want gypsies to use a site at Broomhill which had been suggested by the organisers of the fair.
The show ground at Penistone has also been looked at by the council but the surface is said to be unsuitable.
Meanwhile, a report by council officials says they are worried that, unless a site is agreed, the fair will be held unannounced and on an undisclosed site, perhaps in Wombwell.
Over the past couple of years the fair has been held without warning and authorisation on the council car park in Summer Lane, Wombwell, attracting hundreds of people from all over the country. It is now recognised as an important fair in the gypsy calendar.
