A PRESSURE group is calling Penistone residents to urge Barnsley Council to reject plans for a Tesco supermarket in the town.

Penistone Residents Against Large Supermarkets was set up last month to oppose the controversial proposal.

It says the 24,000-square foot store would be better suited to the south east rather than in an historic northern market town.

Group member Pete Riley said the development lacked imagination, would lead to an increase in traffic problems in Penistone and would take trade from other Penistone stores.

He said: “Barnsley Council must rethink plans for the centre of Penistone. Tesco is wrong for the town. It will suck business from other retailers and destroy the character and social fabric of the market area. "The council has plenty of planning grounds to reject this application. We strongly feel that (The developer) Dransfield Property could come up with a development that is so much more imaginative if asked to do so.

"If we are not careful we will end up with one big store that would be better suited to the south east than a Pennine market town."
