Brad Kerr played an hour on trial with Barnsley FC under 21s on Wednesday then, later that day, scored a crucial goal for Worsbrough Bridge as they came from 2-0 down to make the last 16 of the Sheffield Senior Cup.

Bridge made the short trip to Kinsley Boys of the Central Midlands League who were two up on 55 minutes. Josh Evans got Worsbrough on the scoresheet midway through the second half then Kerr – who has a six-week trial at Oakwell and started for the under 21s at Huddersfield that afternoon – levelled four minutes later. Andrew Broadbent won it late on.

Worsbrough will be joined in the third round of the Sheffield Cup by Penistone Church who also beat Central Midlands League opposition on Wednesday with a 5-2 win at Brodsworth Welfare. The hosts took the lead in the second minute but Penistone were 3-1 up after half an hour through strikes by Andrew Ring and Mark Crossfield and an own goal. Brodsworth made it 3-2 midway through the second half but Jack Moore hit back instantly for Church. The rout was completed by Lewis Dickinson.

Wombwell Main were so close to causing a Sheffield Cup shock on Tuesday night when they lost 7-6 on penalties at Hallam who play a league above them. The hosts, who are bottom of the Northern Counties East League with no points from ten games, took the lead but Martin Watkin levelled for County Senior League strugglers Wombwell in first half injury time. The match stayed at 1-1 after 120 minutes then Hallam won the thrilling shoot-out.

Wombwell's County Senior rivals Houghton Main also lost to NCEL opposition on Tuesday in the Sheffield Cup. Adam Stead gave Houghton the lead at Hemsworth MW on 51 minutes but the hosts led a quarter of an hour later before securing a 3-1 win late on.
