A COMMEMORATIVE tapestry stolen from the Royal British Legion has been returned undamaged after an appeal in the Chronicle.
The tapestry, Flanders Fields, was taken from the Churchfield branch headquarters in the Polish Club on Summer Lane.
Its theft was reported two weeks ago and now the artwork has been returned anonymously to the club.
Branch chairman Goff Griffiths said: “Who ever had ‘borrowed’ it returned it bubble wrapped and addressed to the Polish Club.
“It came back intact and undamaged so we are extremely pleased, over the moon. “It is going to be remounted in the club but this time will be screwed to the wall.”
The tapestry was created by widow Peggy Brown, of Illsley Road, Darfield, in memory of her late husband Douglas and ex-RBL member June Hammond.
It cost her £40 and took a year to piece together the canvas picture.
