SHOPS which sell second-hand goods are being encouraged to sign up to a police scheme to prevent stolen goods being sold on.
Officers visited shops in the town centre at the weekend to ask them to sign up to the Barnsley Safe Seller Scheme which is a voluntary code of conduct.
Det Insp Sharon Hancock said every second-hand retailer they visited signed up for the scheme, which aims to reduce the number of burglaries and thefts.
DI Hancock added: "The system really does help to ensure shops are not selling on stolen goods and putting money in to the hands of criminals."I would encourage Barnsley second-hand shops to sign up to the scheme and for residents to vote with their feet and use second-hand shops displaying the safe seller posters."
