EIGHTY-YEAR-OLD Joan Gough has served as a volunteer at the hospital's breast unit for more than 20 years.
Joan, of Burton Road, started at the hospital in 1994 following the death of her husband, Ralph.
She started out in the surgical outpatients department transferring notes before moving into the breast unit where she she still sorts notes, deals with patients and helps staff.
She added: "I just love every minute of it. When I first started, I was in a state after losing my husband, but it worked for me and it worked for them. It helped me and if I can help someone."
Joan said she was shocked to learn her neighbour Derek Carpenter had nominated her for a Proud of Barnsley award, but was looking forward to the ceremony on November 14.
She added: "I do the job because I like it, not for any accolade or money. I was really surprised when I was nominated," she said.
