BARNSLEY businesses are being warned about bogus directory scams.

Trading standards issued the warning after a number of complaints and enquiries from businesses relating to the activities of potential rogue directory publishers.

Typically, a business will receive a form in the post, via email or by being contacted by telephone or fax offering a free listing or asking if the business still wants to be listed in a business directory.

The business is usually asked to confirm that their details are correct. After doing so, they are then asked to return a form even if they don't want to be included in the directory.

The small print will often state that by returning the form they are placing an order to be included in the directory. The fees are usually considerable and in many cases businesses do not realise that they may have entered into a contract.
