BARNSLEY based Coalfields Regeneration Trust has reported there has been huge demand for its community grants programme in the six months since its launch.

The programme, which aims to distribute £1m to worthy causes throughout coalfields communities, has already committed £644,506, to provide funds to support projects, initiatives and social enterprises.

In addition 80 additional applications amounting to more than £600,000 are currently being processed and reviewed.

To extend the campaign the Trust has added a further £250,000 to the funds.

Head of Social Investment, Andy Lock said: "Despite the many success stories we have to share, we know that there is more that needs to be done. In order for organisations to continue to deliver life changing support, we must continue to invest in coalfield communities throughout the country."

Barnsley Riding for the Disabled - which provides horse riding as a form of exercise and therapy for disabled youngsters - was awarded more than £9,265.

The grant will cover an instructor's time and also volunteer expenses.

In addition equipment including riding helmets, cones, poles, beanbags and other items used in games and horse control exercises will be funded.
