ACADEMIC high-flyer Kira Rosser planned to go to university - but a car crash dramatically changed the course of her life and career ambitions.

The 20-year-old, who left school with 12 GCSEs and three A levels in English language, law and psychology, initially wanted to study a criminology degree. But it was during a hospital stay that Kira, from Staincross, became interested in healthcare.

"A nurse told me that she got into nursing through an apprenticeship," recalled Kira, who suffered whiplash and minor injuries when a vehicle crashed into the passenger side of the car she was travelling in, in January 2013.

"Soon after I saw an advert for an apprentice healthcare assistant at a local GP surgery. I realised that my heart was in caring for people."

Kira has just completed a one-year healthcare assistant apprenticeship at the Kakoty Practice in Sheffield Road which she started in November 2013. She has now been offered a permanent job at the practice as a healthcare assistant.
