THEY say on a clear day you can see York Minster from the top of Barnsley’s most prominent landmark.

Soon members of the public could be testing the claim through a camera linked up to a website and screens in the town hall reception.

The Chronicle office were obscured by trees on the day we went up, but FerryBridge, Drax and Eggborough power stations towards Selby were clearly visible.

More local views include Oakwell, the Metrodome and the Town End roundabout. And despite the construction of the council offices on West Way visitors can still make out the Pennines rising in the west of the borough.

However the climb to the summit of the 145-foot tower is daunting. A series of metal ladders and spiral staircases need to be tackled before reaching the top.

And that is one of the main reasons council chiefs are considering launching the web cam.

Graham Noble assistant director of culture, tourism and sport said: “Seeing the view from the top is a fantastic experience. But access is limited and there are a lot of people who physically won’t be able to do it. Putting a web cam up there will allow more people to enjoy the view.”
