Work on the £5million old folk's housing complex at Royston got underway yesterday.

The first sod of the scheme on the Doles Estate was cut in an official ceremony marking the second development of its kind in Barnsley.

The complex, due to be completed in under a year, will be made up of 50, two bedroomed apartments - 42 of which will be rented out and the remaining eight sold.

Available to people over 55 the complex caters for different levels of care but allows people to retain independence.

There are communal facilities such as restaurant, lounges, hairdressing and assisted bathing which will also be available to other elderly residents of Royston.
