AN ORGANISATION which has been ‘the voice of the people’ for over 30 years in threatened with closure due to lack of community interest. Bolton-upon-Dearne Tenants and Residents’ Association has pulled down the shutters on its office, at least for the time being, but whether they go up again depends on whether local people are willing to become involved. “It would be a great pity if we had to close because we’ve been a voice of the people for so many years and we need that independence to put up a fight,” said Peter Finnegan, acting chairman since last year’s annual meeting. “The campaign by FLAG (Friends of Lowfield Action Group) to fight plans for a big residential development down Lowfield Road has proved that people can have a voice on local issues, but we need the small groups to join together and work together. “Our councillors are willing to take up issues and complaints, but whether they get anywhere or not I don’t really know. This is a voice for the community which the people are likely to lose.” An open meeting will be held at Prospect Road Community Centre on Saturday March 3 at 10.30am and local residents are urged to give their support.
