Ten man Barnsley ended a run of seven straight away league losses with a 1-0 success at Scunthorpe United on Tuesday night.
Josh Scowen pounced on a defensive error early in the second half to get his first goal the club. Jean Yves M'voto was sent off five minutes later but the Reds held on to make it back-to-back wins under caretaker boss Mark Burton.
Barnsley are now eight points clear of the relegation zone and just four adrift of the play-off places.
Burton made two changes to the side that won at home to Crewe on Saturday with strikers Leroy Lita and Kane Hemmings dropping out to be replaced by John O'Sullivan and George Waring.
Barnsley had a few chances in the first half. Conor Hourihane's free-kick scraped the outside of the post and his other long-rangers forced a couple of saves from home goalkeeper Luke Daniels who also denied George Waring from close range.
At the other end, Scunthorpe top-scorer Paddy Madden was put through twice on the right but once shot too close to Adam Davies who saved and the other time fired into the side netting.
Davies made another good save from Kevin Van Veen early in the second half but it was Barnsley who took the lead. An under hit back pass put Josh Scowen clean through on the left side of the box and he fired into the bottom right corner.
M'voto was dismissed soon after when he clattered into Tom Hopper and received a second yellow card after being booked for flooring Isaiah Osbourne in the first half.Madden and substitute Gary McSheffrey both had goals disallowed then Davies made a fine save to deny Andrew Boyce's header.
