HUNDREDS of people have objected to revised plans for a £65 million waste plant.

Development giant Peel Environmental wants to build the renewable energy centre at the former Houghton Colliery site off Park Spring Road.

Peel's original proposals for an anaerobic digestion plant, which recovers energy from breaking down waste food, and a timber resource recovery centre, which breaks down waste wood, were thrown out by Barnsley Council last November.

The revised proposals are for a timber resource recovery centre only and does not include an anaerobic digestion (AD) facility.

Despite this, there have been 300 objections and one of the main concerns is that Peel will use consent for the renewable centre to get an AD plant in 'through the back door'.

Residents in Darfield and Great Houghton also fear the renewable energy centre will smell and there will be an increase in traffic, as a result of 60 HGV movements a day.
