BARNSLEY council is to take legal action against travellers on its new site at Stairfoot - because they have stayed too long.

There was outrage amongst local residents late last year when plans were approved for the 11-pitch £250,000 site that acts as an  'emergency stopping place' which can be used for a maximum of 14 days.

Seven weeks ago nine caravans moved on to the site and have not moved since.

Local people say all attempts by council staff to collect rent from the travellers or move the caravans off the site have failed.

The council has not commented on whether any rent has ever been paid, but acknowledged it will now use legal action to resolve the situation.
