LAURA Goodwin is believed to be the oldest person in Barnsley - and perhaps even South Yorkshire. She celebrated her 109th birthday in Kexborough on Sunday.

Laura was born in 1898 and grew up on Doncaster Road where she lived with her parents until they died. She never married.

During the 1920s and 1930s she taught at Park Road Infants’ School and was headmistress at Ardsley Infants’ School until she retired in 1958, aged 60.

Laura was a regular at Ardsley Church and lived alone until she was 100 when she moved to Kexborough House Residential Home.

Staff say she is still a strong and determined lady who enjoys reciting poetry and always takes communion when she feels up to it.

Celebrations took place on Sunday when her niece Barbara from Northampton visited with her family. They had a lovely time with Laura receiving many cards and a bouquet of flowers.
