Peter Ramage is not expecting to be at Barnsley next season with the main reasons being his wage demands and the club's desire to sign younger players that they can sell on.

Ramage will be a free agent after his contract with Premier League club Crystal Palace expires this summer and he had hoped to stay at Oakwell where he has spent the last two seasons on loan.

"It doesn't look like I am going to stay," said Ramage who has played 48 games for the Reds, scoring three goals.

"I think maybe my age is coming into consideration. They're looking to bring players in that have got a little bit of a re-sale value. I'm not trying to sound arrogant or big-headed, but the wages that I might be looking for are not what they are looking to pay a 31-year-old centre half.

"I'm not going to hold any grudges or bitterness towards anybody at Barnsley, it's just the way football is.  I'm old enough and ugly enough to realise that and I'll just wait and see what offers come up. It still might be at Barnsley but it doesn't look like it.

"When I came back (this season) there was talk it was going to be long-term but that hasn't materialised. That's just football, that's life. I've enjoyed my time here and I have some great memories and great friendships that I'll hold dear."

Head coach Lee Johnson has not ruled out re-signing Ramage but says he will be compared against other possible centre-back signings and that his age might count against him.

The head coach told the Chronicle: "Peter Ramage is is a really good old-school character who I like. We would like somebody younger who is big, strong, fast and reads the game well but that is very hard to find."

Ramage has struggled to keep his place in the team during his time at Oakwell due to persistent injury problems. He said: "The injuries have been disappointing and they are probably down to me playing when I shouldn't have played."

Ramage believes he has several more years as a player ahead of him but would like to return to Oakwell in a new role. He said: "There might be a role here for me somewhere down the line. That would be good because I've enjoyed working with the under 15s and 16s this season. I still think I've got a lot to offer both on and off the pitch for anybody who's looking for a centre half.

"I've got a lot of experience at this level now and at a higher level, and hopefully that experience can count for somebody."
