TESCO is coming to Penistone following unanimous backing from councillors for the controversial markets area plans.
The £15 million regeneration of the area will include a 25,000 square-feet Tesco supermarket due to open in 2008 despite protests from hundreds of residents.
Penistone’s fire and ambulance stations and fur and feather market will be demolished to make way for the store, retail market, 190-space town centre car park and access road, with development work set to start by the end of the year.
The fire and ambulance stations will be relocated to the Springvale depot on Sheffield Road.
The scheme, designed to boost the local economy and increase the vitality of Penistone and the surrounding area, received unanimous backing from Barnsley Council's planning regulatory board on Tuesday.
