A BAN on ball games in a Barnsley park is no more.

Little green signs which say 'BMBC. No ball games. By order' have been a feature in parks and grass areas across the borough for decades - but the sign in Wilthorpe park was toppled by a local councillor in a momentous victory for local children who want to use the park for a kick-about.

Old Town councillor Phil Davies asked the council's parks department to remove it.

He said: "I asked some children from the school to be there to help me topple it, Saddam Hussein statue-like, to make the point that the park belongs to everyone, including ball-playing children.

"It was great to see a lot had brought balls with them and were actually able to play with them."
