IT may have got off to a rather damp start but Barnsley did itself proud for Tour de Yorkshire with more than 20,000 turning out for the cycling spectacular.
The whole nine miles of the Barnsley section, which was part of the final stage of the race, was lined with people waiting to cheer on the peloton of elite cyclists.
Spectators who braved the wet weather to secure their route-side position were glad to see a break in the rain in time for the riders, who were greeted by a roaring crowd, making for a fantastic atmosphere.
A warm Barnsley welcome was given to the cyclists as they pedalled furiously through Staincross, down Wakefield Road, up Old Mill Lane, into the town centre, past the town hall and along Huddersfield Road and through Cawthorne.
