ROCKWARE workers were escorted off the premises on Wednesday after receiving their redundancy notices, colleagues claim.

Staff at the 500-employee Monk Bretton glassworks, formerly known as Redfearns, knew about 70 jobs were to go but did not know who would be out until this week.

A number of employees were told of their fate on Monday and Tuesday but others turned up for their shift on Wednesday believing their jobs were safe because they had not received letters telling them otherwise.

The Chronicle understands one man put in a morning's work before his wife rang and told him there was a letter waiting for him at home.

One source, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “He was allowed to work his guts out, get mucky and sweaty in his job for a few hours before he was told by his wife, of all people, over the phone.”

Other men were taken into offices and told the news by management.
