PROUD villagers and keen gardeners, Don Keating and Pete Hart, have been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award in the Love Where You Live category.

The pair, both from Brampton, have been instrumental in petitioning the local parish council and businesses, gaining support and a small amount of funding to bring dishevelled sites around the village up to scratch.

Pete, 77, and Don, 68, both served in the army and were appalled by the way the village's war memorial was being treated. As it was open on all sides and located on a main road and favourite dog walking route, the memorial had become overgrown and surrounded by dog mess.

As well as tending to the Cortonwood Colliery War Memorial, Pete and Don also clean up other areas around the village, spending one day each week planting flowers and cutting back overgrowth.
