Barnsley boss Lee Johnson admits goalkeeper Ross Turnbull could leave the club.

Championship side Leeds have spoken to the goalkeeper but are yet to make an official bid while other clubs could potentially come in for him.

The 30-year-old former Chelsea stopper signed as number one for the Reds, who he had previously played for twice on loan, on a two-year contract last summer.

Turnbull, who is the oldest player at the club, struggled with injury and played less than half of Barnsley's League One games last season. Adam Davies flourished in his absence and is expected to start the season as number one having signed a new contract in May, making Turnbull a very well-paid back-up by League One standards.

Johnson told the Chronicle: "Ross is part of our squad and we know he's a good 'keeper but Davo has done very, very well and looks like a top prospect.

"Ross is on a decent wage and he lives further north, a couple of hours away from Barnsley, so it might be better for him to get a club closer to where his family are based.

"The Leeds interest was there, we allowed him to talk to them and that deal is pending. We just need to see how it plays out."

The third goalkeeper at the club is Wales under 21 stopper Christian Dibble, who is yet to play for the first team. Johnson rates Dibble highly and says it is not a certainty that Turnbull will be replaced by a new signing should he leave Oakwell.

The Reds boss said: "We could bring in another player, maybe on loan, but we have got good options here already.  Dibble could be number two and compete to be number one. We will have to see what happens with Ross first."
