IT seems to have been a long time coming - but shoppers will finally be able to see for themselves the start of demolition work in Barnsley town centre.

Buildings, bridges and car parks will all go to make way for the £50m Better Barnsley project and the town centre will never look the same again.

Work is already well underway getting rid of the Carpetworld building and Thursday the next phase of the demolition schedule - and the first to be clearly seen starts with a bang.

The Kendray Street bridge will be at the mercy of a pulverising-chewing machine, which will first "chew" the parapet of the bridge off and then take the rest apart- bit by bit.
