CILLA Black was modest, unassuming, and really 'one of us' according to Barnsley man Peter Ashman who will never forget meeting her when he was 'Surprised'.

Peter, 80, of Appleton Way, Worsbrough, paid tribute to the star who won his heart when he appeared on Surprise Surprise - he had previously been no big fan.

"The reason for my surprise was that I had served in the Life Guards, part of the Household Cavalry.

"There have to be a very special set of circumstances before you can put on the ceremonial uniform and it had been a topic of discussion in the family for years that I'd never got to wear it, and consequently would never have any photographs to show the grandkids. Cilla solved all of that in one go."

Cilla died at her home in Spain on Saturday, aged 72.
