YEAR 11 pupils at Willowgarth High School have successfully completed a training course at Barnsley Fire Station.
For seven weeks the ten lads have been doing exercises similar to those used for training real fire-fighters.
They have gained skills in squad drill, hosework, ladderwork, dealing with road traffic accidents, breathing apparatus and first aid.
The project has given the pupils a credit towards an Asdan qualification and last Thursday was their passing out parade at the station where they received a certificate.
Firefighters, led by Mick Mason of Royston station, gave up their own time and praised them for their commitment, enthusiasm and progress.
Following the success of the project the school is looking to run another course. Derek Riley, head of year 11 at Willowgarth said: “Over 15 parents were there and were very proud of the pupils and their approach to the course. “School has agreed to fund the next stage of the course after recognising the positive effect it has had upon pupils.”
