A MONTHLY tea dance organised especially for lonely, elderly or socially isolated people has grown from 40 guests to more than 100 as it celebrates its first anniversary.
The Superjam Tea Party is held at the Holiday Inn at Dodworth and monthly numbers have continued to rise. The last event was attended by more than 120 - a number organisers hope to top with the next event on Tuesday which will mark a year since the event was launched.
It was the brainchild of Kathy Markwick of Home Instead senior care and a member of Barnsley Rockley Rotary Club.
"It really is going from strength to strength and it shows there is a need for it," she said.
"We've had a lady come along whose husband died 15 years ago, and she hasn't been able to go out dancing since - she really enjoyed it."It helps to combat loneliness and social isolation."
Kathy said there are 100 free tickets available, which are reserved for lonely, elderly or socially isolated people. But others are welcome to go along and pay £5.
The next event is on Tuesday at Holiday Inn from 3 to 5pm. There are a few free tickets left - call Kathy on 0114 2830827 07729 528844.
