IT was an emotional night for Barnsley midwife Paula Maguire as she collected a Pride of Britain award for helping to raise millions for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

She was named fundraiser of the year at the ceremony in London on Monday, which was televised last night.

Paula was presented with the award by actor Sir Ian McKellen, alongside TV presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, for helping to raise £7.2m by introducing the Ice Bucket Challenge to the UK. On top of that, she has also raised £13,000 of her £15,000 personal target by running marathons.

Paula, 41, of Hammerton Farm Avenue, Ryhill, started fundraising in memory of her uncle Stuart Hughes who died of motor neurone disease in 2009, aged 50.
