FRESH calls for traffic–calming measures on a Royston road have been made this week – after a five–year–old boy was hit by a car.

James Elliot has lived on Midland Road for 20 years and the latest incident has prompted him to start a petition calling for more safety measures to be reintroduced.

Although speed was not a factor in the collision, which saw the youngster sustain a broken leg, the 65–year–old has urged Barnsley Council to consider installing a pelican crossing to make the busy road safer for pedestrians.

Coun Caroline Makinson told the Chronicle that highways officers are looking into conducting a speed review on the road.
