The six-time World Championship finalist was watched by most of the spectators who got in for free on Saturday morning, the last of four days of world class competition in the International Championship qualifiers.

White told the Chronicle: "I like Barnsley a lot. I have been there a few times over the years to play exhibition matches and to visit my friend Joe Johnson's club.  There have been regular events at the Metrodome in recent years which is great.

"I think it will be a regular fixture on the circuit for years to come and, hopefully, in the future we will be able to stay there for three or four days and see the town properly because it has been flying visits the last few times.  It's a fine venue."

White, 53, surrendered a 3-1 lead in defeat against Liverpudlian Rod Lawler. He said: "I was disappointed to lose but Rod won four frames in one visit so he probably would have beaten anyone on that day."

Former world champions John Higgins, Ken Doherty, Neil Robertson and Peter Ebdon were all winners on Saturday. The shock of the weekend came on Saturday with Judd Trump, a former winner of the competition, dumped out 6-0 by world number 120 Michael Wild.
