A BRIDAL shop has been crowned winner of the eighth annual Barnsley Civic Trust Retail Awards.

The Wedding Palace, on Doncaster Road, trounced the competition beating off 269 businesses to take the overall prize at a ceremony at the Civic on Tuesday evening.

Judging is carried out through mystery customer visits and author Milly Johnson presented the awards to town centre shops and businesses on behalf of the trust.

It was a double whammy for The Wedding Palace owners Fay Green and Gemma Gains, who also picked up the 'bridal' award.

Gemma, 32, and Fay, 37, both of Blenheim Road, Barnsley, took over the shop from Fay's parents Ian and Diane Stacey in July, who handed over the reins after 23 years.
