A LOCAL resident is urging Barnsley folk to take action to preserve the humble British hedgehog this winter.

Janet Mason, of Monks Way, Monk Bretton, is a carer for the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, feeding and watering hedgehogs too weak to fend for themselves over winter. She estimates over the five years she has been working she has helped 500 hedgehogs.

“The hedgehog population is in massive decline. With an estimated 35 million hedgehogs in Britain in the 1950s, there are now fewer than one million. If you do the maths, in 15 years there might be no hedgehogs left.”
