A COUPLE have been awarded compensation from Berneslai Homes after it failed to properly conduct checks on a tenant who ended up owing them almost £2,000 in rent.

They decided to let out the house in Wombwell, which belonged to a relative who died, through Berneslai Homes’ property management service for the private sector.

But the tenant failed to pay rent on several occasions, or pay a bond and made alterations to the house.

The couple, who do not want to be named, had their complaint upheld by the Ombudsman who found Berneslai Homes had failed to properly check references, obtain advance rent and a bond, carry out regular inspections and to provide an up to date rent account.
