A NEW law has been used by Thurnscoe residents to demand that Barnsley Council puts a stop to new housing development in the village until there is an environmental inquiry.
Among residents’ concerns are the lack of facilities, shops and recreational centres compared to the number of houses which are being built, as well as the limited employment opportunities in the village.
Hundreds of signed letters have been sent to the council calling for a full environmental impact assessment under the new Barker Law which can put a hold on development.
It follows a petition which was raised at the end of last year calling for the resignation of all three ward councillors.
“People are so unhappy with everything that someone decided to collect one at a coffee morning a fortnight ago and then everybody started asking for copies of the letter,” said a resident who declined to be named.
